Artist Statement
In my work I use the infinite possibilities of the human figure to express and explore my ideas. I use life-like and abstract means to create torsos, busts, heads and masks. A very important part of my work is the “leaving unfinished” or “non finito” technique, contributed by Rodin to modern sculpture. I believe the fragment, the torso, the incomplete figure, can be more expressive than the intact body. By using this technique, I can give the viewer more freedom for a personal interpretation of the work.
Some of my sculptures make reference to ancient cultures and the meaning of time in the life of man. They show eroded, cracked, bandaged and repaired surfaces, broken and torn edges and bring to mind mythology, religion and death, archeological excavations and ruins. I try to convey an inner life, dignity and a strange ambiguity.
My sculptures are eternally human and an embodiment of the never-ending cycle of life and death. They are silent witnesses from the past that communicate across time and cultures. Through these human images I attempt to show the relevance of the past to events of the present and foster interest in human history.
My work is about the “Human Experience – Yesterday and Today.”
